Genetic engineering in agriculture is an extremely controversial topic. 81% of Germans are against the use of genetic engineering in food production. Interestingly, however, the vast majority of scientists are in favour of genetic engineering.
In order to gain a comprehensive insight into the topic, I first conducted a four-hour interview with a researcher at ETH Zurich who deals with this topic. Our design team in germany then spent several weeks doing research together. When selecting the various aspects and the design, it was important to us that viewers get a comprehensive overview of the topic without being overwhelmed by the wealth of information. We found this particularly difficult, as we realised that we are neither world champions at deleting nor did we want to leave out information. Nevertheless, we had to cut back from iteration to iteration and sharpen the focus.
The information in the poster is now organised according to current opportunities and risks, as well as future prospects and a brief description of the process. We were careful not to get too technical, as the poster is intended for the general public and not just for experts. It was important to us that viewers could take something practical away from the poster and weigh up the arguments in favour and against.
The poster was created in collaboration with two fellow students, Louis Bieler and Justin Dechow.
